We will pick you up from your hotel at 8:30 am and head east!
We will travel along the picturesque Sub-Balkan Road with exceptional views of the surrounding mountains and arrive after about 2 hours in Koprivshtitsa – a beautiful small town at the foot of Sredna Gora. Today it looks calm and peaceful, but 140 years ago it was not like that. In 1876, one of the largest uprisings against Ottoman rule broke out here and the town became a symbol of the Bulgarian Renaissance. Today Koprivshtitsa is an architectural reserve. We will walk along the small cobblestone streets (comfortable shoes are required!) and visit one of the house-museums.
Our next destination, less than 40 km away, is another historic town: Panagyurishte. It’s time for lunch and – without a doubt – for some excellent wine! The local wine producer we will meet is called Rumelia. Although it is not among the most glamorous wineries in Bulgaria, their wines, especially the reds, are real gems! We will enjoy them in the company of Maria in a unique atmosphere. She is the owner of an authentic 19th century house, but also a culinary master. She will personally prepare us a delicious rural lunch, which we will pair with Rumelia’s wines.
Panagyurishte is best known for the magnificent Thracian golden treasure (4th-3rd century BC), kept in the city museum. The treasure – discovered by chance in 1948 by three brothers – was used for wine rituals by the Thracians more than 2500 years ago! We will have the pleasure of seeing it, along with other interesting exhibits from the rich history of Bulgaria, exhibited in the museum.
We expect to return you to the hotel by 7:00 PM.
