During our wine tasting weekend we will visit some distinguished wine cellars like Orbelia Winery (a family-owned company with focus on local varieties), Zlaten Rozhen (another young and promising winery) and Orbelus Winery (the first Bulgarian completely certified cellar for organic grapes/wines), Villa Melnik (a must-visit wine travel destination), Zornitza Family Estate Relais & Chateaux (the luxury gem of the region), Rupel (interesting wines from local and italian varieties), Sintika (the follower of the institute, where some varieties like Melnik 55 were born), etc. These producers are quite ambitious and already experienced in offering excellent wines. They will welcome us for a wine savouring, accompanied by a folklore program (on request). In addition, Orbelia and Zlaten Rozhen offer accommodation in their own small hotels in the village of Rozhen. The tour will take us also to Rila Monastery (UNESCO Hertiage) – arguably the main Bulgarian sightseeing and part of our turbulent history…
Of course our wine tour includes a stroll in the town with approx. 240 inhabitants – Melnik – a famous trading center in the past and now a charming tiny town, famous for its sand pyramids (a real natural phenomenon) and… of course the wine which has been produced in the area for ages. The legend is telling us that the Melnik wine in the past was so thick that one could carry it in a handkerchief. Let’s check by ourselves!
